10k’s – moderate and (too) hard

Posted by thepeteplan on June 12, 2009

Thursday:

10k = 36:29.5 / 1:49.4 / 25
2k splits:
1:49.6 / 25
1:49.6 / 25
1:49.8 / 25
1:49.6 / 25
1:48.6 / 25

Friday:

10k again but this time aiming for a hard rather than moderate effort.
1k splits:
1k = 1:42.9 / 29
2k = 1:43.0 / 29
I thought it was a good idea to go off just under pb pace and see how it felt, but was thinking it wasn’t a good idea already this early on.
3k = 1:43.4 / 28
When the rate drops you know it’s only a matter of time…
4k = 1:46.1 / 27
I didn’t want to not complete the 10k, so it was a matter of what pace can I drop to and maintain to the end.
5k = 1:46.3 / 27
6k = 1:46.3 / 27
7k = 1:46.1 / 27
8k = 1:46.1 / 27
It was watching both the average split and predicted time now, knowing that I really wanted a sub 35min still. With 2k to go it always seems managable, don’t you think?
9k = 1:45.2 / 28
Can’t afford to let the average slip any more if I’m going to get sub 35.
10k = 1:43.1 / 29
Last 1k back at 10k pb pace in order to get the sub35.

10k = 34:57.8 / 1:44.8 / 27

I really do think that on the right day I could take my 10k pb at the moment. Afterall I did do a 30min pb a couple of months ago at 1:42.6 pace, and it’s “only” another 4mins from there to hold on. Doing the first 3k that fast it was never going to feel easy again though.
