Race time approaching…

Posted by thepeteplan on July 7, 2008

With a 1 mile (1609m) race this coming weekend a couple of faster sessions are the order of the week to be able to row at any sort of pace in the race on Saturday.

Today’s first speed session of the week was also an opportunity to have a go at this month’s CTC challenge (see www.c2ctc.com). It was also evidence of why I generally advocate speed work being in your training programme through the year:

8 x 500m / 3min rest:
1:32.4 / 34
1:32.4 / 33
1:32.0 / 35
1:31.9 / 35
1:31.7 / 36
1:31.6 / 37
1:31.5 / 37
1:31.2 / 38

Ave = 12:14.6 / 1:31.8 / 35

The pace isn’t bad. Not up to my best ever on this session, but a good solid session none the less. However, when I first get back into speed work after a period away from it I really like to ease in gradually. Not really a choice with a race less than a week away. Going at these sessions maximally the first week back on speed work destroys me. I did this session in my lunch hour, and felt like I needed to sleep all afternoon at my desk. This evening I just feel ill – head ache, sneezing, tired. All because my body is just not used to this type of effort level, it is very different to the effort involved in a hard 10k row. At least this was the worst session for this week. Well, apart from maybe the race itself on Saturday…

    I certainly agree, not something one can rush back into as the body just wouldn’t work quick enough. A good row there Pete all the same.
